Most of those companies have informally settled on all releasing new patches on the same day each month, so if you keep current it doesn't interrupt you that often. It cannot substitute a resident antivirus application. In summary, it's unfortunate, but if you have a confirmed malware infection, a complete re-pave of the computer should be the first place you turn instead of the last. Check your hosts file (\%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) for any suspicious entries and remove them immediately.
